If the plural of mouse is mice, and the plural of louse is lice, then ...?

why isn't the plural of spouse called spice?If the plural of mouse is mice, and the plural of louse is lice, then ...?
I don't know, but you made me smile:)

Have a happy day!If the plural of mouse is mice, and the plural of louse is lice, then ...?
It's called a strong mutation. Mouse becomes mice. Whereas spouse (which undergoes a soft mutation) simply becomes spouses.

It's just the way that our language developed. There's no other real explanaition.
Because a spouse should not be plural. You should only have one.

Or, because that would be funny. ';James was thrilled to come home to his spice until things got complicated.';
spice was already a word before spouse was
